El Centro is the postcard the rest of the bay grew up around. The crowned bell tower of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe presides over terracotta rooftops; cobblestone streets climb past whitewashed adobe into the hills; and the Malecón — a mile of bronze sculptures, street performers, and sunset crowds — runs the whole show from the waterfront. The cathedral, the galleries, the river island, the markets, and the beach are all within an easy walk of one another. Locals call it the heart and soul of Vallarta, and for once the cliché is the literal truth.

It’s also the neighborhood with the best story on the coast. Up the hill in Gringo Gulch, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton kept twin villas joined by a pink bridge during *The Night of the Iguana* — the romance that turned a fishing village into a world destination. Today that same hillside, with the quieter streets of 5 de Diciembre to the north, is in the middle of Vallarta’s most dramatic transformation: new boutique towers — the best of them deliberately echoing the historic “Estilo Vallarta” of cantera stone, hand-painted tile, and wrought iron — rising among the colonial homes, with everything still on foot.
